Alligator Lake

Closest Town:  Lake City

Lake Size:  338 Acres

Public Boat Access:  Located off South Marion Ave.

Lake Notes:  Specializing in Largemouth Bass and Black Crappie.  Bluegill and Redear also caught.  Largemouth bass fishing is great during early spring. February and March are the best producing months. Top fishing can be had using float-diving lures and purple, blue, black and motor oil colored plastic worms. Black crappie fishing is good during March but is very slow the remainder of the year. The best bait is live minnows fished approximately three feet deep in open water. Bluegill fishing is outstanding from April through September. The best bait is live crickets fished near vegetation. Alligator Lake is a shallow, fertile lake with extensive areas of marshes and cypress swamps.

Santa Fe River

Closest Town:  Fort White

Public Boat Access:  1 located off US Hwy. 41 & SR 25, 1 off US Hwy. 27, 1 off CR 47

Lake Notes:  Specializing in Largemouth Bass, Redbreast Sunfish, Suwanee and Catfish.  75 miles long.  The Santa Fe River offers excellent fishing for both Suwannee bass and largemouth bass. Although most bass caught are in the 1.5 lb. range or smaller, the combination of swift water and light line makes for an enjoyable outing. The best lure is the small black plastic worm. The best fishing offered in the river is for redbreast sunfish. This scrappy panfish is easily caught on small spinners, live worms, and crickets, all of which should be fished near fallen trees or stumps. The Santa Fe River is unusual in that it completely disappears underground and then reappears 3 miles downstream. The river drops into a large sinkhole in O'Leno State Park and reappears in the adjacent River Rise Preserve State Park.
